We’ve all been there. We have our first baby and dread the day maternity leave ends and we have to leave our sweet little babe at daycare or with a babysitter while we go back to work. Or we graduate college and get our “dream job” - only to find that sitting in an office with barely any natural light from 9-5 is everything but a dream.

I had my first baby in 2018 and for me, that was the final push I needed to figure out how to make my side hustle generate enough income to give our family the financial support, but allow me to be home with my sweet girl.

Look, I get you. No matter how good of a job our husbands/significant others/family members have - it's extremely difficult to live on one salary these days. Especially if you want to have a savings, take vacations & even buy a house!

What’s amazing is that in today’s online world - there are SO many other options! I have found success in staying home with my baby girl AND making a substantial income each month owning my own business, so I wanted to share options for you to do the same!

There are many options out there - but here are some of the most popular:

  1. Multi-Level Marketing - Network Marketing (whatever you want to call it)* I am not speaking from experience here as I do not participate in an MLM, but I have friends who have found success in it and I don’t bash it!

What It Looks like: You join someone’s “team” and begin marketing these services or products as if it is your business, but keep in mind (I explain this more below), it is not your business. The more passionate you are about the products or services, and the more personal experience you have with them - the more likely you are to come off as genuine and be successful in getting others to buy.

Business Structure: You receive income from people purchasing products and also from “joining your team.” Be prepared to realize though that oftentimes you have to make an investment to even get started, and that this is not your business, no matter how much it is marketed to you as it is. You do not own the products or have the ability to continue to keep creating them if the corporation decides to shut down. But this means you don’t have as much stress when it comes to taxes, overhead costs, running the actual business, etc.

For those of you who have a product (Young Living, Arbonne, Doterra, etc) or service (Beach Body) you are passionate about - this could be a great route for you if you don’t want the responsibility of owning a business!

  2. Create a Product to Sell on Etsy/Shopify/WooCommerce, etc. Where are my product creators at?!

Knit baby beanies? Have awesome painting skills? Make the most hydrating skin lotion? It’s time for you to pull all your skills together and start an online store!

What it Looks Like: There are multiple platforms out there that allow you to put your product on the market and sell to the world. Just keep in mind - you will need to market your product, ship out orders by hand (until you can afford a fulfillment center), and keep up with production costs.

Business Structure: Although each product you sell is profit, you still have to cover production costs, shipping, website space, etc. But this is your business & your product. You own every aspect of it!

  3. Becoming a Virtual Assistant: Service-Based Business

Okay - you had to assume I was going to mention becoming a VA right?! :) If you have administrative skills, content creation experience, a creative brain, copy writing or editing experience, a love for marketing, the desire to help other businesses grow, etc - YOU can have your own business as a Virtual Assistant!

What it Looks Like: The beauty of a service-based business is you can make it what you want! Want to create a website that lists your services? Go for it! Want to market via social media channels? Yes girl! Have no desire to tell the whole world you are a VA? Simply reach out to small businesses and pitch your services. Want to work 10 hours a week? You can! Want to work 40 hours a week? Do it!

Business Structure: As a Virtual Assistant, you create your own services, your own prices, your own hours, etc. You can take on project-based work, or simply sign on a client that you complete hourly work for each week. You can charge per hour, per project or even have a monthly retainer rate that your clients pay you. I actually utilize all 3 of these options in my business.

Being a VA can be a side hustle that just brings in extra income for your family. Or it can replace your full-time job - allowing you to live that “laptop lifestyle” everyone is wanting to do these days. All you need is WiFi and your laptop!

Of course there are responsibilities in owning your own business. This includes scheduling your time to be sure you are completing projects and tasks on time. Making sure your services are priced competitively so you aren’t charging too much or even worse, too little, for your skills.

If you choose to manage customer service inboxes or answer phone calls, you may have an “on-call” type of status. You also have to maintain your own finances, or hire an accountant to help you with this come tax season :)

But all of these responsibilities are WELL worth the flexibility, the income & the passion behind your business!
